World-class gymnastics returns to Melbourne’s Hisense Arena from February 22 through to 25, and if you can’t make it to the stadium, you won’t have to miss out, after Gymnastics Australia struck a deal with Fox Sports Australia to broadcast the inaugural event.
The Finals of the World Cup Gymnastics Melbourne will be broadcast on Fox Sports Australia on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 February.
The broadcast will be hosted by Olympic Games expert, David Culbert, with specialist commentary from two of Australia’s most successful gymnasts, Monette Russo and Sam Offord.
Friday night’s opening night of the Finals will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Channel 506 from 6pm, with delayed coverage of Saturday night’s final being broadcast on Fox Sports Channel 501 from 10pm.
The International Gymnastics Federations’ (FIG) new competition format will see elite gymnasts from nine countries compete individually on select apparatus, with a Champion crowned in each discipline; six for men and four for the women.
The ground- breaking event will be hosted in Melbourne each February until 2020, and in its final two years will serve as an official qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Games.
International competitors in 2017 will include Krisztian Berki from Hungary – the 2010, 2011 and 2014 World Champion and 2012 Olympic Champion on Pommel Horse – and Sanne Wevers from the Netherlands, who won Gold on Beam at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The dominant Japanese Men’s team, winners of the team event at the Rio Olympics, will also be represented by two of their gold medal stars, Kenzo Shirai and Koji Yamamuro.
Superstar Aly Raisman – Captain of the USA Women’s Olympic Gymnastics team and Gold Medallist at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games – will also be in Melbourne as the be the Official Event Ambassador for the World Cup Gymnastics Melbourne.
Gymnastics Australia’s Telecommunications Partner, OVO Mobile, will also livestream all four days of the event, which fans will be able to access via gymnasticsworldcup.com.au.
